A pregnant woman yesterday appeared in court charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Mother of two Melissa Pancham, 32, was arrested at a market stall along Guaracara Tabaquite Road, Williamsville, on Tuesday. It is alleged that she had 27 grammes of cocaine in her possession. The street value of the drugs was estimated at $2,000. She was charged by PC Maltoo.
Pancham initially pleaded guilty when the charge was read to her by Senior Magistrate Cherril-Anne Antoine in the San Fernando First Court.
However, the magistrate noticed she was shaking her head while prosecutor Cleyon Seedan was reading the facts in the matter. When asked if she agreed with the facts, Pancham said she did not. The magistrate then entered a not guilty plea.
Pancham was represented by attorney Gobin Harripersad, who said she has two children ages nine and 14 and is also two and a half months’ pregnant. The magistrate granted her $60,000 clerk of the peace approval bail and $15,000 cash bail.
The matter was transferred the Sixth Court for May 16.
