Residents became worried when they saw the river turned fluorescent green after 10 am on Monday.

The Environmental Management Authority issued a release stating that it was notified by a Couva-based company that around 7 am on Monday December 5 there was an accidental spill of approximately 15 gallons of a tracer dye at its Couva facility.

The EMA further added that substance was subsequently released into the drain.

Ramdial said environmental accidents cannot be tolerated since the area has a large community that depends on the fishing industry.

She said mishaps can put many families on the breadline in hard economic times.
