Dyer-Griffith no longer in the running for COP leadership

The Congress of the People (COP) has said that two people have filed their nomination forms before the stipulated deadline, to run for Political Leader of the COP.

The two are Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan and Dr Sharon Ann Gopaul-McNicol.

It means that potential candidate Nicole Dyer-Griffith is no longer in the running to become political leader of the party.

Dyer-Griffith's candidacy had been challenged by members of the party who claimed that she was no longer a member of the party by virtue of being a member and interim leader of the Alliance of Independents.

The COP held a National Executive meeting on October 8th following which it announced that a committee was set up in accordance with policies and procedures to interview three members who had either taken up key positions or formed their own political party after leaving the COP and were required therefore to attend the special screening by this committee.

The party said that those three persons were asked to submit to the screening committee: 1. A letter of resignation from the party they either joined or formed, after leaving the COP. 2. A letter of acceptance from the said organization.

It added that all three applicants refused to attend this screening and therefore, could not be granted membership within the Congress of the People.

The election of the Political Leader for the 2017 to 2020 term, will be on Sunday 19th November, 2017 between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm.
