Former national cyclist Gene Samuel was robbed at gunpoint by bandits along the Beetham Highway last night but managed to wound one of his attackers with his licensed firearm.
Reports are Samuel stopped because of a flat tyre in the vicinity of the Clear Waters facility on the westbound lane of the highway.
But he was accosted shortly after by two armed bandits. The suspect robbed Samuel of valuables and jewelry and when they were about to leave one pointed a gun at Samuels.
The cyclist then drew his licensed firearm and fired off several shots, hitting one of the suspects.
The men escaped, but police were later informed that one of the suspects was at the hospital.
