Members of the Syrian community in T&T are deeply hurt by the recent missile strike in Syria by the US and its allies —UK and France— because they believe innocents are bearing the brunt of the attacks.
There are claims that a chemical weapons site has been destroyed in the strike but former honorary consul for Syria, Arab-Trinidadian Albert Hadeed does not believe those claims.
Hadeed, 85, in an interview at his Glencoe home yesterday said the building which was destroyed was one that produced medical supplies at an affordable price and added that there exists a certificate to prove that no production of any mass weaponry/chemical was taking place there.
He said that the eight-year civil war is really about the different rebel groups who are trying to destabilise Syria because of the Israeli, American and the western nations interference to bring down the government of Syria.
He added that Syrian people are not being attacked by chemical weapons and added that the videos and photos that are being spread are fake and “just a production.”
The Hadeeds had three of their family members killed in the civil war and still have relatives living in Syria.
Hadeed made it clear that he, his family and by extension the Syrian Lebanese community, are not anti-American and respect Americans because they are grateful to them for the healthcare and education offered to them over the centuries.
He said he was born in an American hospital and at one time in his life was saved by an American doctor who treated him for hay fever and asthma.
Hadeed believes that the world is being misled as to the reasons behind the attacks as he describes President Bashar al-Assad as one of the most humble and gentle men he has ever met.
Hadeed said he has visited Syria 10 times, where he met al-Assad and his father.
“He is a very humble, peaceful and loving person. They accuse him of being a brutal criminal but did you ever see the Syrian army leave to go fight any neighbour or kill anyone outside?” Hadeed asked.
“No! It is the regional and international people who go to fight in Syria. Americans paying billions of dollars for those fighters to fight in Syria,” he claimed.
He said the local Syrian community loved and supported al-Assad.
“The point is, we are more informed as to what is really taking place and we understand and care about what is taking place. We are not anti-American but it is the way they are buying and selling the politicians,” Hadeed said.
Hadeed disclosed that it was the Americans who first established schools in two major cities in Lebanon and said that his grandfather, Antonios Hadeed converted to the Presbyterian faith and became an Evangelist – a reverend.
Hadeed said Syria is aligned to Russia (specifically stating not communism) because Russia has always been loyal to them and supported them economically, financially and through the military. Because of these reasons, he said, Syria was loyal to Russia.
He said the cause of the war is based on three reasons – oil, gas and the protection of the State of Israel.
He added that the Syrian president will only defend his people and not kill his own people unlike what is being reported in the mainstream media around the world.
