A man has comitted suicide, presumably by drowning himself in one of Petrotrin's oil tanks in Point Fortin.

This follows a nine-hour stand-off during which emergency services and Petrotrin staff worked to stop the man from taking his life.

The following is a statement from Petrotrin on the issue.

"At approximately 11:00 a.m. today (Saturday), a member of the public entered the Petrotrin’s Tank Farm at the Company’s Trinmar Operations, Point Fortin.

It was discovered subsequently that the man had climbed one of the tanks in an attempt to commit suicide. Petrotrin officials responded with as much precaution as the situation would allow.

The Company’s EAP counsellors as well as Security, Fire and Medical Services along with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service were all on site. Petrotrin along with the national authorities combined their efforts to persuade the man to climb down to his safety.

Unfortunately, at around 8.00 pm it was observed that the man was no longer visible on the tank. It is presumed that he may have opted to go into the tank which is currently filled with oil.

Investigations have been launched into this incident.

The individual’s family has been formally notified and our sympathy and concern go out to the relatives and friends of the deceased."
