Mother critical after being chopped by son following schoolwork quarrel

The Ministry of Education says it has received reports from school supervision personnel of a chopping incident involving a student from a central secondary school and a close relative.

The close relative has been identified as the boy's mother.

The incident occurred at home at approximately 7:30 am on Thursday 19th April, 2018, after the mother scolded her son about his school work.

The teenager, a student of Presentation College, Chaguanas, is now in police custody.

According to police reports, there was an argument between the boy and his parents at their Butler Village, Waterloo home last night.

The boy's father returned from work this morning and noticed the boy was not at school.

When asked why he was not in school, the boy did not respond and sped off on his bicycle.

Shortly after, the man found his 46-year-old wife bleeding profusely from several chop wounds on her neck and arms.

She was still conscious and was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.

Police say a cutlass was used to carry out the attack.

The teen was detained around 9 am by police along Roopsingh Road, Carapichaima.

Minister of Education Anthony Garcia has expressed regret over the incident and is assuring that the Ministry is mobilising all of the necessary resources of the Student Support Services Division for this situation.

The Ministry says experts from the Student Support Services Division of the Ministry will provide counselling and intervention for teachers and students at the school which the alleged perpetrator attends.

The Student Support Services Division will also be extending similar services to the student and members of the affected family.

Minister Garcia says the officers of the Student Support Services Division of the Ministry have already been contacted and will be visiting the school tomorrow, Friday 20th April, 2018.
