Pet shop owner charged with possession of protected birds

A Chaguanas pet shop owner will appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate on Friday after he was found to be in the possession of protected birds.

A party of officers of the Praedial Larceny Squad, led by Corporal Jeffers and including PC Virgil and Kisto and WPC Mitchell were on mobile patrol on Thursday along the Caroni Savannah Road, where they observed a yellow-headed Amazon parrot at the front of the pet store.

The bird was caged and being offered for sale at a price of $1,000.

The officers contacted the Ministry of Agriculture's Game Warden Division as well as Chaguanas police for assistance.

When confronted, the pet shop owner allegedly became abusive and hostile with the officers.

Checks on the premises revealed two Saffron Finches which were also listed as protected.

The pet store owner was arrested and taken to the Chaguanas Police station where he was charged by PC Langley.

The man was also charged with the use of obscene language and resisting arrest.
