Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has denied he has an account in any financial institution in the United States. He is also calling on Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith and the Financial Intelligence Unit to initiate probes into the claims Oropouche MP Roodal Moonilal has made against him and to report their findings to the public.
Rowley also said he would instruct Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi to use the various treaties Government has signed onto with the United States, to pursue the acquisition of various statements and documentation at the financial institution named by Moonilal so that the matter could be thoroughly investigated.
He made the comment during a press conference moments ago, labelling Moonilal's allegations "a monstrous lie."
Accompanied by his lawyer Michael Quamina, Rowley denied allegations he benefitted financially from A&V Drilling in relation to the fake oil fiasco at Petrotrin.
Moonilal made the claims during yesterday's Budget debate in Parliament, where he allegedly read from documents he claimed showed the Prime Minister had benefited from financial transactions conducted through a Florida-based bank.
But Quamina noted that the email purported to have been sent to the PM was not, in fact, his email address, carried no date and was also not addressed to Rowley and was obviously to be false. He said the company named by Moonilal as having been part of the transaction, Formula 1 Trading, had also ceased to function since 2011 and was struck off the company's registry in T&T.
He said while he could not challenge the statements Moonilal made in the House since he would have been covered by privilege, subsequent statements made by the Oropouche MP to the media and on social media were not covered. Quamina said he would now look at these statements with the intention of taking Moonilal before the court for defamation against his client.
Quamina also proposed to go after individuals who were making similarly damaging statements against the PM on social media in relation to the matter.
Rowley will also make a formal statement on the matter in parliament this afternoon.
