Police have charged a businessman for failing to render assistance following a fatal accident and for failing to give a breath specimen to the police.
He appeared in court on Monday and has been granted bail in the sum of $25,000.
Police made the announcement via the following media release:
"A 28 year old man has appeared before the Chaguanas 3rd Magistrate Court, in Tunapuna, charged with failing to give a breath specimen and failing to render assistance following a fatal accident on November 15th, 2015, that resulted in the death of 68 year old Una Belgrave, of Church Street, Chagaunas.
Avinash Khanai, a businessman of Orange Grove Street, St Augustine, was placed on $25,000 bail on Monday 16th November, 2015, and ordered to present himself at the Chaguanas Police Station every Tuesday and Thursday between the hours of 6:00am and 8:00pm. The matter will be next heard on December, 16th, 2015.
The accident occurred at around 1:30am along the south bound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway, Chaguanas, in the vicinity of the Calvary Revival Deliverance Temple, when the vehicle in which the victim was travelling came into contact with another vehicle.
There were four occupants of the Mitsubishi Lancer motor vehicle including the driver, at the time of the fatal accident.
Two of the other occupants were discharged from hospital yesterday whilst the driver, Gershwin Charles, 49, of St Thomas Village, Chaguanas, remains in a critical condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.
Acting Corporal Anselm Martin of the Chaguanas Police Station is continuing with the inquiries."
