Police say that at the time they were recovering the suspicious device resembling a grenade in Point Fortin, they strongly suspected that it was a cigarette lighter, but needed to confirm it.

The police have issued this statement on the matter:

"Ammunition specialists attached to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force have confirmed that the suspicious object found by a sanitation worker while cutting grass along the Techier Link Road, Point Fortin today, was in fact a cigarette lighter.

The item, which resembled that of a ‘hand grenade’, was discovered by the Point Fortin Borough Corporation employee at around 7:00am on Tuesday 7th June, 2016 and the Point Fortin Police was notified.

As a precautionary measure the area where the object was found was cordoned off while officers from the Explosive Detection and Disposal Unit of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service moved in and took possession of the item, which they believed at the time to be a cigarette lighter.

This suspicion was subsequently confirmed by the ammunition specialists."
