Close to a dozen prison officers were injured during a riot at the Remand Yard at the Golden Grove Prison, Arouca this afternoon.
Reports indicate that an agency came to the prison to conduct periodic spraying for vermin and other insects at the facility.
We were told, remandees of the North Wing were taken into the exercise yard to allow for cells to be sprayed when officers of the prison service's, emergency response unit decided to conducted an impromptu search.
This appeared to have angered inmates who then began rioting in the airing yard.
CNC3 was told that the number of inmates outnumbered the 11 prison officers at the time of airing and four were assaulted.
However, we learnt that it was other inmates who rushed to the defence of the officers and stood between them and the irate inmates, offering protection.
