UNC Member of Parliament for Tabaquite, Dr Suruj Rambachan says he is viewing with deep concern, the plight of over 4,000 persons now awaiting cataract surgery.
"It is inexcusable the failure of the Minister of Health to address the situation in a timely and compassionate manner," Dr Rambachan said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the fact that the minister has publicly said that he is now sourcing new equipment for cataract surgery demonstrates how much he is out of touch with the real needs of the people.
He added: "The UNC encourages the Minister to utilize the services of countries like India to provide a team of doctors from that country to reduce the backlog. The nation will remember the impact that a team of neurosurgeons who come from China to Trinidad under the tenure of the UNC had in dealing with complex neurology cases in San Fernando."
He said in the statemen that the government continues to hold on to vanity projects while people run the risk of going blind.
