Member of Parliament for Tabaquite, Dr Suruj Rambachan, is calling on Point Fortin Mayor Clyde Paul to step down while he answers a charge in court of drinking under the influence.
Dr Rambachan points to other cases in which public officials stepped down or were removed from office pending the outcome of their matters.
The following is Dr Rambachan's statement.
"The Mayor of Point Fortin has no moral authority to remain in his position as the Mayor.
He must in the interest of Public Integrity vacate his office while he awaits the outcome of his case.
The UNC to which I belong always acted promptly to protect Integrity in Public Life.
Many UNC Ministers lost their positions because of personal discretions.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley in the Interest of the Public good and in order to set the proper moral standards must order the Mayor of Point Fortin to vacate his office until the matter is resolved.
MP Marlene Mc Donald has vacated office pending the determination of matters now before the Integrity Commission."
