Festival tourism in Tobago can be boosted with the appointment of the Board of Commissioners for the Tobago Festivals Commission during a brief ceremony at the Division of Tourism, Culture and Transportation today.
Secretary of Tourism, Culture and Transportation, Nadine Stewart-Phillips, distributed Letters of Appointment to the members who are now charged with the responsibility of overseeing the management of all of Destination Tobago’s flagship festivals.
Established in May 2010 with the mandate to provide managerial support and strategic direction for cultural expositions and festivals in Tobago, the Festivals Commission has been operating without a Board of Commissioners since 2013.
“The appointment of this new Board of Commissioners signals a fresh start for events and festivals in Tobago,” Secretary Stewart-Phillips said as she thanked the board members for accepting their appointments.
“There is certainly a lot of work ahead and there are challenges to overcome as we aim to significantly enhance the management and overall quality of Tobago’s signature events. However, I am confident that this team is capable of getting the job done efficiently and in the best interest of the destination.”
The Board is led by Executive Chairman, Mr. George Leacock, who will also be responsible for the operation, administration and strategic direction of the Tobago Festivals Commission. Ms. Lois Leslie will serve as Deputy Chairman; Ms. Marissa Williams, Mr. Locksly Jack, Ms. Yvette Hector-Granville, and the Division’s Administrator, Ms. Claire Davidson-Williams, will serve as Commissioners; with Ms. Cherishe Trotman-O'Neil as Secretary to the Board.
Events now under the Board’s purview include, but are not limited to, Tobago Carnival, Tobago Heritage Festival, Tobago Jazz Experience, Tobago Dragon Boat Festival, Tobago Maypole Festival, Tobago Blue Food Festival, CARIFESTA and the Prime Minister’s Best Village Trophy Competition.
Immediately, the Board will put measures in place to ensure the successful planning and execution of the Tobago Jazz Experience 2018 for its 10th anniversary celebration and plans are already underway for Carnival 2018.
