While Tropical Storm Don is expected to pass north of Tobago this evening, the Met Office says th island could be affected by strong winds.

Both Trinidad and Tobago will also experience heavy rainfall that could result in flooding.

The following is the Met Office's 5 am bulletin.

"At 5 am today Tuesday 18th July, 2017, the centre of Tropical Storm Don was located near 11.5 N Latitude and 56.2W Longitude or approximately 600 km east of Grenada.

Don is currently moving toward the west near 30 km/hr and this general motion, with an increase in forward speed, is expected to continue through Wednesday evening.

On the forecast track, the centre of Don will move across the Windward Islands, north of Tobago, tonight.

Gusty winds, at times in excess of 60 km/hr, could affect Tobago and the TTMS will continue to monitor any changes in the forecast track.

Rainfall associated with Don is expected to affect Trinidad and Tobago from this afternoon with showers occurring in varying localities and thundershowers in few areas.

A gradual increase in frequency and intensity of showers/thundershowers is expect after late afternoon with accumulation of 40 – 60 mm.

Gusty winds and street/flash flooding are expected in areas of heavy showers or thundershowers.

The possibility of landslides/landslips exists. Sea conditions would become moderate to rough in open waters and choppy in sheltered areas towards evening and all persons with marine interests should take necessary precautions.

All interests in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and its Dependencies are asked to monitor the progress of this system and pay close attention to information being issued by the TTMS by visiting our website at www.metoffice.gov.tt, downloading our mobile app (search: TT Met Office) and following us on Twitter and Facebook. The TTMS is reminding citizens that we are in the Hurricane Season and adequate preparation is advised.

WE WISH TO UNDERSCORE THAT AT THIS TIME TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS NOT UNDER ANY TROPICAL CYCLONE WATCH OR WARNING.

The TTMS will be closely monitoring this system as it moves across the Windward Islands and will issue another bulletin at 6:00 p.m. today, Tuesday 18th July, 2017, or earlier if the situation warrants."
