Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo jetted in to open the international airport named after himself today – and was greeted by a bizarre bust supposed to depict him.
Ronaldo attended the official renaming ceremony that saw Madeira International Airport renamed after the Real Madrid star as a tribute to the island’s biggest hero.
The Portugal star was raised on Madeira and his family still live on the island he calls home, despite leaving to start his football career at the age of 16.
And he still remains a huge favourite with the population on Madeira, thousands of whom queued to catch a glimpse of their idol.
But there were a few puzzled looks around when officials revealed the bronze bust of the player that will adorn the newly named airport.
Ronaldo, 32, was accompanied to the airport renaming by his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez and mother Maria, and heads were turned when a statue with a debatable likeness to the image-conscious Real Madrid forward was unveiled.
