Fire at Drag Mall was 4th in three years

Fire fight­ers are still at the scene of a fire at the Peo­ple’s Mall on Hen­ry Street in Port-of-Spain.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, the fire start­ed at the site around 7.45 am.

Fire fight­ers were quick­ly on the scene and were able to con­tain the blaze to a few of the booths on the site.

Booth own­ers who were around the trou­ble spot were seen des­per­ate­ly try­ing to sal­vage what­ev­er they could as fire fight­ers worked to pre­vent the fire from spread­ing.

$4 million Drag Mall coming in 2019

The Min­istry of Hous­ing and Ur­ban De­vel­op­ment will be­gin con­struc­tion of a $4 mil­lion Drag Mall in the cap­i­tal city next year, Hous­ing Min­is­ter Ed­mund Dil­lon said dur­ing yes­ter­day’s Stand­ing Fi­nance Com­mit­tee ses­sion in Par­lia­ment.

He made the com­ment in re­sponse to ques­tions from Op­po­si­tion MP Dr Roodal Mooni­lal on plans for the “de­vel­op­ment and man­age­ment of a prop­er­ty” at 43 In­de­pen­dence Square, Port-of-Spain.

Dil­lon said the prop­er­ty was re­ferred to as the “Drag Mall,” which is lo­cat­ed next to New City Mall.

Drag Mall in Port of Spain gutted by early morning fire

An early morning fire in downtown Port of Spain has gutted several businesses and caused over a quarter million dollars in damages.

The fire started just after 9 am this morning.

Witnesses say they saw smoke coming from a closed booth and alerted the Fire Service. However, by the time they arrived, the fire had already consumed the entire building. The firefighters did manage to contain the blaze and stop the fire from spreading to the nearby New City Mall.
