The Ministry of Health says it is continuing its recruitment drive of medical professionals from the Republic of Cuba with the recent intake of 58 specialist healthcare professionals.
The ministry says this ongoing recruitment is part of its overall strategy to address the shortage of appropriately qualified and experienced health professionals in the public health system.
This is the second batch of Cuban nationals who have been integrated into the public health sector for 2019.
The Ministry of Health says it notes, with concern, misinformation placed in the public domain as it relates to the employment of nursing practitioners from Cuba in the public health system.
A statement by the Ministry says: "As indicated by the Honourable Terence Deyalsingh, Minister of Health, the Ministry is taking steps, in the first instance, to source specialist nurses from the local professional pool."
Nurses attached to the Regional Health Authorities have kept good on their promise to take a "rest day" if they did not receive their back pay in their bank accounts by yesterday evening.
CNC3 News understands that several hospitals across the country are currently operating with an unusually low number of nurses.
We have also received complaints from persons who say that those who have shown up are operating at a slow pace.
And nurses aren't the only ones taking action.
