Archbishop reminds priests need support, give a little more

Do you want to give your local Roman Catholic priest a Christmas bonus?

Then give generously to the Christmas collection at the church, as the entire amount received goes toward the priests, Archbishop Jason Gordon has said.

The entire Easter and Christmas collections go toward supporting the clergy, Gordon said during an interview in this week’s publication of the Catholic News.

Since 2015, the average amount collected from all the Roman Catholic churches around the country during Christmas has been $1.5 million.

Priest killed in France by attackers claiming connection to ISIS

A priest has been killed in an attack by two armed men on his church in a suburb of Rouen in northern France.

The attackers entered the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during Mass, taking the priest, Fr Jacques Hamel, 84, and four other people hostage.

Police later surrounded the church and French TV said shots were fired. Both hostage-takers are now dead.

The Amaq news agency, linked to so-called Islamic State, said "two IS soldiers" had carried out the attack.

President Francois Hollande said the men had claimed to be from IS.
