The expectation of more prison breaks in T&T in the future is like a ticking time bomb if the Judicial System is not reviewed and fixed soon.
This was the grave concern of the president of the Prison Officers Association (POA) Ceron Richards, during an interview on CNC3’s The Morning Brew Tuesday morning.
On the heels of May 15 prison break at the Golden Grove Remand Yard Prison in Arouca where eight prisoners escaped, Richards said before the many questions, there needs to be an examination of the scenario.
National Security Minister Stuart Young says he has asked that an inter-agency approach be taken to threats against prison officers.
In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, Minister Young said the perpetrators will face the full brunt of the law.
The Minister issued the following statement on Tuesday:
"It has come to my attention that there is in circulation, a document purporting to be a confidential report authored by SORT which references possible threats to Prison Officers.
Commissioner of Prisons Gerard Wilson on Thursday met with seven inmates who protected a group of prisons officers who were under attack from other inmates at the Golden Grove Remand Yard in Arouca.
Their actions were noted and will be presented for consideration when their sentencing is to be made by the respective judges in their matters.
Wilson spoke briefly with Guardian Media on Thursday.
The Commissioner was at the time meeting with the inmates one and one as he commended them for their quick and prompt action.
Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Dane Clarke has called for building 13 of the Maximum Security Prison, in Arouca, to be renamed in honour of murdered acting Prison Supt Wayne Earl Jackson.
Clarke, who is acting as Prison Commissioner, paid tribute to Jackson's efforts at the MSP and made the call during Jackson's funeral service at Bethel Outreach Ministries in Arima on Tuesday.
Prisons Commissioner Gerard Wilson says the lack of supervision of prisoners will not be tolerated.
Commissioner of Prisons Gerard Wilson yesterday called for closure “once and for all” in the deadly jailbreak at the Port-of-Spain (PoS) Prison.
Speaking with the T&T Guardian yesterday, which marked the three-year anniversary of the event, Wilson said closure was of utmost importance because “it will inform the Prison Service what type of security lapses would have taken place”.
But Prisons Officers Association president Ceron Richards said he believes there is a major cover-up of the true facts in the jailbreak.
