Naipaul’s birthplace on verge of collapse

Va­grants have moved in­to Li­on House, the child­hood home of late No­bel Lau­re­ate VS Naipaul, which is in an ad­vanced state of di­lap­i­da­tion and could col­lapse at any time.

The once ma­jes­tic white struc­ture made fa­mous in Naipaul’s book, A House for Mr Biswas, in which he trans­forms the rep­re­sen­ta­tions of li­ons carved on the front of the build­ing in­to the Hin­du mon­key-god Hanu­man.

Sahara dust and smoke trigger health warnings

Dust in your face! Al­so your nose, mouth and lungs. But that’s the pe­ri­od which T&T is in, un­der siege from Sa­hara dust plus smoke from bush fires caused by the long dry sea­son.

“The Sa­hara dust will be with us un­til about Wednes­day, but it’s nor­mal for this time of year,” me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal of­fi­cer Bag­wan­deen Ram­datt said yes­ter­day.

The Met of­fice yes­ter­day chart­ed a dust haze in­dex of 32 de­grees C for Trinidad and 31 de­grees C for To­ba­go.

Missing girl found

A teenage girl who was reported missing has been found.

Police say Britney Betty-Ann Thompson, 17, of Caesar’s Court, Morne Diablo, who was reported missing on Wednesday 13th March, 2019, has been found.

As has been the practice, the police have given no further information of the girl's whereabouts but is thanking the public for its assistance in ensuring the teenager’s safe return.

Cabinet approves start of 'mixed-use' tower for Piccadilly

The Cabinet has approved the demolition of the old Besson Street police station, as the first phase of a Piccadilly development project.

This will make way for what is being described as a mixed-use tower building.

The announcement was made at today's post-Cabinet media conference by the Minister of  Housing and Urban Development, Edmund Dillon.

The tower building will involve space for economic activity on the ground floor, recreational space on the second floor and residential apartments on the other floors.

Breaking: US grounds 737 airlines; American Airlines' T&T flights cancelled

US President Donald Trump has announced that the US is grounding flights by Boeing’s 737 Max aircraft following the model’s second crash in five months on Sunday.

The president made the announcement in a news conference Wednesday.

American Airlines flight AA 2703 that was due to leave Piarco at 3.25 pm and flight AA2713 that was due to leave Miami at 5.55pm and arrive in T&T at 9.35 pm, have both been cancelled.

All flights that are in the air will be allowed to land before being grounded.

T&TEC work to cause water shortage in East T&T tomorrow

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) advises customers in parts of North-East Trinidad served by the North Oropouche Water Treatment Plant, that there will be an interruption in their pipe borne water supply on Tuesday 12th March, 2019 between the hours of 11 am and 1 pm.

This has become necessary in order for the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) to carry out planned maintenance work in the area that would affect the electricity supply to the plant
