Prison Officers' Association on Vicky Boodram's release

The Prison Officers' Association of Trinidad and Tobago says it cannot be business as usual following the Vicky Boodram escape.

The association released a statement a short while ago saying its time to critically examine the manner in which entities in the criminal justice system communicate.

The prison service is making it clear it is is only responsible for holding remandees on instructions from the court and that's all.

The association says once proper documentation is presented the remandee is released into police custody.

CARPHA explores GPS-based app to track locations of mosquito breeding sites

The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) says it is exploring the use of mobile technology in its fight against mosquito-borne diseases.

The agency, in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recently pilot tested an app developed to replace traditional paper-based vector collection tools used in the field.

The app uses modern technology, such as satellite imagery and Global Positioning System (GPS) to indicate the location of breeding sites of the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in communities.

International: Japanese warships to join US fleet near North Korea as tensions rise

Japan is getting ready to send several destroyers from Japan’s maritime self-defence forces to join the US aircraft carrier, Carl Vinson.

The US warship is heading to the Korean peninsula, trying to deter North Korea from conducting further missile and nuclear tests while China tries to stop them from continuing.

This comes as the Chinese president, Xi JingPing, had a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, trying for de-escalation and a more “peaceful” approach toward North Korea.

Panama names team to face T&T in next week's World Cup qualifier

Panama Head Coach Hernan Dario Gomez has selected his final squad to face Trinidad and Tobago in next Friday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The last time Panama played in Port of Spain in a World Cup qualifier in Port of Spain, T&T came away 2-0 winners with Stern John opening the scoring in the first half and Dennis Lawrence netting the second item after the break.

Stephen Williams back on job with another 6-month extension

The Police Service Commission expects to appoint a permanent police commissioner in the first half of 2017.

This as acting commissioner Stephen Williams has been granted another six-month extension. 

Commissioner Williams returned to the job today after a three-month vacation leave. 

Before a permanent commissioner can be selected the Police Service Commission must first find a recruitment firm to handle the hiring process.
