16 more arrested for breaches of curfew

The Police Service said yesterday that within a 24-hour period that 16 people were arrested for breaches of curfew hours and another 117 were ticketed for improper use of or failure to wear face masks, bringing the total so far to 10,805.

The total number of people arrested for breaches of the public health regulations stood at 823 up to press time on Friday with no arrests within the last 24-hour period.

On Thursday, three men appeared virtually before a Mayaro Magistrate charged with breach of curfew.

Leon Harper, 40, of Calmapass, Guayaguayare, Grantley Reefer, 62, of Plaisance Park, Pointe-A-Pierre and Steffon Beharry, 19, of St. Anns, Mayaro, were arrested by officers of the Eastern Division in Mayaro on Wednesday.

The men appeared in court on Thursday where they all pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined $10,000 each or in default serve three months in jail.

Meanwhile, police have disclosed that over 1,000 of its officers are currently in quarantine and 206 of them have so far tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

A total of 1,042 officers are currently in quarantine.
