A 20-year-old man from Les Coteaux appeared in the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday charged with the attempted murder of Ellena Dial, 19, of Riseland Trace, Carnbee.

Antonio Marcelle, a skilled labourer, was not called upon to plead when he appeared as the charge was laid indictably.

The court heard that the charge stemmed from an incident which occurred on January 28, 2020, where Dial was doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire.

Guardian Media understands that intense and collaborative investigations between officers at the Crown Point Police Station, Tobago Homicide Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department came to an end on Carnival Monday with respect to the incident.

Around 8.50 pm on January 28, 2020, Dial, a kitchen assistant employed at the Tristar Restaurant, was set on fire by an attacker known to her. After the attack, Dial managed to run to the Apex Restaurant, located at Kilgwyn Extension, Canaan, where she sought help. Emergency first aid was administered by the staff and the EHS was called. She suffered third-degree burns about her body. The woman was rushed to the Scarborough General Hospital for treatment and was subsequently airlifted to Trinidad for advanced medical care. Dial is still warded in a critical condition at hospital.

Marcelle was placed on $400,000 bail and is scheduled to reappear in court on March 4, 2020. A preliminary enquiry is also expected to be conducted.

Sgt. Sterling of the Crown Point Police Station laid the charge.
