Police recovered nine stolen vehicles and arrested five suspects during three separate operations in central Trinidad and Morvant.
They also recovered 23, 20 pound LPG gas tanks, which were reported stolen.
They said a search has been launched for three other suspects. A report said of the nine stolen vehicles, seven were recovered after lawmen searched a property in Freeport.
The vehicles, along with several parts including vehicle engines, were found at Arena Cemetery Street, Siewdass Road, Freeport. A couple, residing at the property, was arrested in connection with the find.
The vehicles recovered included:
• One silver Nissan Versa
• One white Toyota Aqua
• One blue Nissan Wingroad
• One white Honda Vezel
• One white and black Nissan Caravan
• One white Nissan Versa
• One white and black Toyota Axio
In the second exercise, the police held one suspects and recovered one stolen vehicle and seized the 23 gas tanks in Central. The seizures were made based on intelligence gathered, the police said.
Officers from Couva CID and Task Force, led by acting Sgt Badree and acting Sgt Modeste went to Tewarie Circular Arena Road, Freeport. While searching the compound for guns and ammunition, they saw a black Nissan Wingroad Wagon in the garage.
On further checks, they found that the chassis number had been tampered with. Further inquiries proved that the vehicle had been stolen. The occupant was held and investigations are continuing.
The officers also executed warrants in Dow Village, California and Waterloo Road, Carapichaima, where they seized the stolen gas tanks. Two of the tanks were recovered in the Dow village area while the remaining 21 were recovered in the Carapichaima. The two men were held for questioning.
And Morvant police officers recovered a vehicle minutes after it was stolen. They were up to late yesterday searching for three men in connection with that theft. A report said it was quick work by Morvant and Port-of-Spain police officers resulted in the recovery of the stolen vehicle in the Leau Place, Laventille Road.
Around midnight on Tuesday, the owner of the car was plying his silver blue Nissan Almera for hire north along the Morvant Old Road, Morvant. He picked up three men the Morvant Taxi Stand in Port-of-Spain. One suspect sat in the front seat, while the others sat in the back.
In the vicinity of the Old St Joseph Road, Morvant, the front seat passenger told the victim that he wanted to drop off, and on stopping, he took out a firearm from his right, front pants pocket, pointed it at him and said, “This is a robbery!”
The passenger, who sat behind the driver, locked his neck and told him “don’t move”.
The driver was ordered out the car and all three men drove off north along Morvant Old Road. A report was made to the police who immediately blanketed the area in search of the vehicle and the men.
The vehicle was tracked and recovered by officers of the Morvant Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Port-Of-Spain Task Force in the Leau Place, Laventille Road, Port-of-Span area intact, minus the key. The suspects were not seen.
