As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, and the quality of education of thousands of school-age children continues to be affected, many corporate citizens are stepping up to challenge of ensuring no child is left behind with their donations of computer equipment and related technology, to facilitate online learning.

A recent recipient of such a donation from a corporate partner, IGT Trinidad and Tobago, is Amica House, a safe haven for socially displaced children, especially vulnerable girls, located in Curepe.  The centre has been helping vulnerable youth and providing with a home for 19 years.  Currently, 20 children are in residence at Amica House.

IGT recently donated a tablet and five new desktop computers with headsets and webcams. This equipment, installed by IGT technicians, is intended to further support the children’s virtual schooling and educational learning.

The partnership between Amica House and IGT began some seven years ago, when in July 2013, the company refurbished the computer room at Amica House and donated computers through its After School Advantage Program.

Sister Jude Marie Aird, Administrator of the Home, says the recent donation, made in December 2020, has given the children the support they need, educationally.

“IGT gave Amica’s girls the courage, inspiration and opportunity to maximize their potential with modern technology and an education that opened up a world of knowledge,” she said.

Sister Aird also revealed that the girls at Amica House, who were preparing for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams, received additional help with their school-based assessments as they were able to surf the web to find information for their schoolwork.

Four of the girls at Amica House have now entered university and are pursuing degrees in Bio Medical Technology, Pre-med, Civil Engineering and Criminology.

“Today, Amica reflects God’s goodness and countless blessings on IGT, as our present Covid-19 crisis, which affected our education systems, led our girls to make full use of the computers for ‘virtual learning’,” Sister Aird said.

The IGT After School Advantage Program allows the company to apply its technological expertise—as a leading provider of technology and services to lotteries and commercial gaming operators worldwide—to assist in the education of our youth.

IGT donates new computers, printers, software, furniture, and volunteer hours to non-profit agencies through its After School Advantage Program in Trinidad and Tobago, and wherever IGT conducts business worldwide.
