Zion Roop

Thirteen-year-old Zion Roop suffered several injuries to his head and upper body after a security vehicle struck him on Monday.

An autopsy performed at the Forensic Science Centre in St James revealed that he died from multiple blunt force injuries to his head, chest and abdomen.

Contacted yesterday afternoon, his father Joel Roop said they had not yet arranged for his funeral.

Zion was at his La Retreat Road, Gonzales Village, Guapo home with his two younger sisters when his mother Afebee Arthur asked to go to the shop to buy something on Monday.

According to reports, Zion was attempting to cross the Southern Main Road near La Retreat Road when he got hit. The driver of the security vehicle, an estate constable with G4S Secure Solutions, told police that around 3.20 pm he was heading towards La Brea in the company’s vehicle, known as the money truck, when he saw Zion standing on the left side of the road. He claimed as he got closer, the boy suddenly ran across the road. He said he swerved to the left to avoid hitting him but he still collided with the child. A motorist took the child to the hospital in his personal vehicle. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Point Fortin Area Hospital.

Police recorded statements from the driver and released him pending an investigation.

Visiting the scene was a party of officers from Guapo Police including Sgt Ali, Cpl Boodhai, WCpl Frederick and WPC Ashby. Cpl Boodhai is investigating.
