Police officers use their vehicle to block vehicular traffic after the roof of this building at the corner of Eastern Main Road and Old St Joseph Road, Laventille, was blown off during heavy winds and torrential showers yesterday.

Strong winds along the East-West corridor yesterday afternoon left one business without a roof and residents in Morvant without electricity.

Krystal Grant, owner of the Hummingbird Bar, said not only did her business lose its roof but the rain ruined her appliances. Grant said the incident was the last thing she needed as the business was already struggling because of COVID-19.

“It’s like you move one step forward, three steps backward. We dealing with the pandemic still surviving little by little but this is a blow,” Grant said.

Grant estimates the damage to cost approximately $50,000. In nearby Morvant, strong winds toppled a tree that pulled down electrical wires, leaving residents without power. Fire officers and residents worked together to remove the tree.

The Met Office had warned of isolated showers and thunderstorms favouring the western and northern halves of Trinidad yesterday.

Isolated showers and gusty winds are also expected today.
