Bail for maxi-driver accused of sexual assault

A Laventille man was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 when he appeared before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate on Wednesday this week via video conferencing, charged with Assault by Beating and Grievous Sexual assault.

According to a statement from the police service, Terry Murrell, 45, a maxi-driver, of Boxhill Trace, Laventille, was granted bail with surety to cover both charges, when he appeared before the Magistrate.

The matter was adjourned to Wednesday 29 April.

The victim reported to police that on Monday 24 March she and the accused got into a heated argument, during which he held her by the throat and sexually assaulted her.

Investigations were supervised by officers of the Gender-Based Violence Unit (GBVU), Port-of-Spain, which led to Murrell’s arrest.

And a San Francique man was granted bail in the sum of $70,000 when he appeared before a Siparia Magistrate also on Wednesday via video conferencing charged with Assault by Beating and two counts of Cruelty to a Child.

The police said Avanash Ragoo, 42, of Chickorie Trace, San Francique, was granted bail when he appeared before Magistrate Margaret Alert.

The matter was adjourned to Wednesday 29 April.

The victims, one adult female and two female minors reported to police that on Friday 27 March they got into an altercation with the accused, during which he physically assaulted them.

Officers of the GBVU South Western Division carried out investigations, which led to Ragoo’s arrest.
