A Belmont man is expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate today, via video conferencing, charged with the murder of Lawrence Charles, which occurred on Tuesday 19th May 2020.

20-year-old Hasani Baker—of Upper Maryland Hill, Belmont—was also charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC, on Tuesday 26th May 2020.

The victim, 36-year-old business owner, Lawrence Charles, also of Belmont, was found outside his business place with gunshot wounds about the body on Tuesday 19th May 2020. He was taken to hospital where he died.

Officers conducting investigations into the incident subsequently observed a blue Nissan Almera motor vehicle with three male occupants travelling at a very high speed which aroused their suspicion.

The vehicle was intercepted and three male suspects, one of them nursing a gunshot wound to his leg, were arrested. The wounded man was taken to hospital for treatment, while the other two were detained.

Investigations into the incident were supervised by Snr. Supt. Chandool and W/Supt. Martin, both of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region 1.

Hasani Baker was charged by PC Pierre, also of HBI Region 1, on Tuesday 26th May 2020.
