The Bovell Cancer Diabetes Foundation will host its 12th annual Diabetes in the Limelight Jamboree virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, the foundation said as in the past years, the event is free and will consist of various activities during the week of November 1 through to November 7, 2020.

It will highlight preventive measures to promote healthier lifestyles; continue to help the public better understand the serious threat that diabetes poses to individuals, families and communities; and create awareness about how to prevent and/or delay diabetes and its complications.

In addition, this year’s celebration will raise awareness about the impact that diabetes has on the family and support network of those affected; and promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of issues surrounding diabetes.

The foundation noted that people with diabetes are among those high-risk categories who can have serious illness if they get the COVID-19 virus.

“This year, due to the additional stress of the attending factors caused by COVID-19, there is a greater need for us to be our brother’s keeper by making sure that our friends and relatives continue their medical check-ups, taking their prescribed medicine and most of all continue their daily exercises,” the foundation added.

The foundation is an incorporated, non-profit, charitable organisation with a mission of enriching lives of people living with cancer and diabetes.

It has been serving individuals/families living with, or at risk for cancer and diabetes by offering modest grants to enhance their quality of life, providing prevention and management educational programmes with emphasis on foot care, diet, nutrition and physical activity, conducting small-group workshops to create awareness and educate about diabetes prevention, management and control, writing proposals and seeking funds from local, regional and international organisations to conduct its work.
