A positive COVID-19 test has created as string of complications for a Central family, as they fear an elderly woman who requires kidney dialysis may be put at risk due to delays in the arrival of results for COVID-19.

Last Friday, a male member of the household was confirmed as a positive COVID-19 case, just about eight days after taking a test after suspecting he had been exposed to the virus at work.

The man had remained in self-quarantine away from his family since taking the test, but up to yesterday afternoon remained in self-isolation at the family home as he waited to be taken into the parallel health system.

The confirmation of the positive test created another headache for the family, as a 70-year-old woman who lives on the premises was automatically tested on Friday for the deadly virus and ordered to self-isolate.

The family said the woman, who requires kidney dialysis, has since missed a treatment appointment due to the order.

Her family’s further worry is, with the results still pending up to yesterday afternoon, she has not been given word as to if she can go to her scheduled appointment today potentially worsening her condition.

The family said they have attempted to contact various health facilities concerning the situation, and have been told nothing more than they would have to wait until the results return before she can access treatment.

“They are telling us to hope for the best but preparing for the worst,” said a relative of the woman.

The positive COVID case has continued to stay in an area of the home away from her but has also grown frustrated as he would be approaching 14 days since his initial test without being taken in for treatment or further assessment.

Guardian Media reached out to Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh as well as the Communications Department of the Ministry for a comment on the situation but got no response.
