Pastor Sonia Whitlock and congregants of the Sanctuary of Praise New Testament Church of God gave out food hampers to members of the Mt Pleasant community as part of a drive to help persons in need during the COVID-19 pandemic over the weekend.

Members of the church said they eagerly took up the initiative to demonstrate the true purpose of the church.

Church member Deon Rojas acknowledged that churches were coming under fire for failing to provide support for those in need while still expecting members to pay tithes during the Stay-at-Home measures. But he said Sanctuary of Praise was different.

“This is not a media fanfare, this is not just for giving out to families in need for social media flag ups. It’s about giving some positive feedback, it’s about understanding that the church is not only about tithes, we give and we always give.”

Whitlock endorsed his statement. She said her parish members were elated to be a part of the initiative.

“As a church, we say more than just we care and it’s about us just offering love and compassion just like Jesus Christ would have done,” she told Tobago Today.

Whitlock said she had made contact with other parishioners who agreed to contribute to helping other families beyond the weekend’s hamper distribution exercise.
