An autopsy has revealed that 53-year-old Geeta Newman, who was found dead at her Plaisance Park home on Tuesday night, was murdered.

Initially, Homicide detectives were not called in because Newman’s body bore no visible marks of violence when she was found. However, an autopsy at the Forensic Science Centre yesterday revealed her death was due to asphyxiation and she was also beaten on the head.

A close female relative and her husband, who live in a separate apartment at the house, were being questioned by investigators last evening.

Police said the property is a family house which was divided into separate apartments occupied by Newman’s relatives. However, Newman, a part-time domestic worker, was living in Rio Claro and only moved back into the premises, along the Southern Main Road near Claxton Bay, two weeks ago.

Other relatives told the police they heard her screaming on Monday evening and got worried when she was not seen on Tuesday and called the police. The officers arrived around 10 pm and found her body on the couch in the apartment. A relative said he did not know why anyone would want to kill Newman.

Snr Supt Wayne Mohammed visited the scene, along with officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 and St Margaret’s Police Station. Investigations are continuing. (SW)
