Cops make arrests in Tobago and South Trinidad, illegal weapons seized

Several people were arrested in separate police operations in South Trinidad and in Tobago, between Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th February 2022, according to an official statement from the Police Service.

Tobago Division operations

A Tobago man was arrested and a high-powered rifle, a pistol and a quantity of ammunition were seized by officers of the Tobago Division, during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the Carnbee district yesterday.

The exercise was conducted between 6 am and 11 am on Thursday 3rd February 2022.  It was coordinated by Snr. Supt. Benjamin and ASP Joseph and spearheaded by Insp. (Ag.) Piggott of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).  It included officers of the Tobago Divisional Task Force.

During this exercise, officers proceeded to a bushy area at Riseland, Carnbee, where they conducted a search which resulted in the seizure of one automatic rifle, one pistol, 53 rounds of 5.56 ammunition and several pieces of clothing.

An 18-year-old man who resides in the Buccoo district was arrested in connection with the seizure. Investigations are ongoing.

Southern Division operations

Meanwhile, in the Southern Division, an intelligence-led exercise was conducted between 9 pm on Thursday 3rd and 2 am on Friday 4th February 2022.

This exercise was coordinated by W/Snr. Supt. Winchester, ASP2 Jaikaran and Insp. Philip and included officers of the Southern Division Task Force and the Special Operations Response Team.

It resulted in the arrest of six persons in the Vistabella and Pleasantville districts for firearm, ammunition and narcotics offences.

A 23-year-old man of Vistabella was held for possession of 598 grammes of marijuana and possession of 85 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Officers then proceeded to a house at Pleasantville Terrace, Pleasantville, where they found a .38 revolver and five rounds of ammunition. Five suspects, ages 18-29 years, all of Pleasantville, who were in the house at the time of the exercise, were arrested in connection with the finds.

Investigations are ongoing.
