Officers of the T&T Police Service have confirmed that 14 barrels of gasoline were recovered and seized from the choppy waters off Salybia on Monday.

According to a police report around 2 pm, police acting on a tip-off arrived in the area and found the barrels of gasoline floating in the sea.

Police estimated the discovery to be valued at more than $100,000.

A police source said they suspected that the barrels of gasoline were loaded onto a sea vessel which eventually got into difficulty causing the people on board to throw the barrels overboard, abandoning them.

Police said over the years gasoline and diesel have been used in the illegal trade of drugs and arms and ammunition between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.
