A Cou­va cou­ple, fac­ing a to­tal of 46 charges re­lat­ing to sex­u­al abuse of a mi­nor, is ex­pect­ed to ap­ply for bail to­mor­row.

Rand­hir Singh, 44, and his com­mon-law wife Chan­droutee Seep­er­sad, 43, ini­tial­ly ap­peared be­fore a mag­is­tra­cy reg­is­trar in the Cou­va Mag­is­trates’ Court on Mon­day and were re­mand­ed in­to cus­tody. 

The charges stemmed from sex­u­al crimes al­leged­ly com­mit­ted against a 16-year-old girl dur­ing an eight- month pe­ri­od.

Seep­er­sad was charged with 16 counts of caus­ing or en­cour­ag­ing the se­duc­tion, pros­ti­tu­tion or sex­u­al pen­e­tra­tion of a child, three counts of cru­el­ty to a child and four counts of fail­ing to re­port the abuse of a mi­nor. 

Singh was charged with 23 counts of sex­u­al pen­e­tra­tion of a child. The cou­ple was ar­rest­ed on Ash Wednes­day at their home by of­fi­cers of the Cen­tral Di­vi­sion Child Pro­tec­tion Unit (CPU). 

They were charged by PC Ti­tus at­tached to the CPU. Singh was rep­re­sent­ed by at­tor­ney An­dre Kooma­ls­ingh while Sgt Ramjits­ingh was the pros­e­cu­tor. 

They were de­nied bail and the mat­ter ad­journed to to­mor­row
