Couva man held with guns, ammo, foreign currency

A joint police intelligence-led exercise resulted in the arrest of a man for possession of an assortment of guns, ammunition, and cash yesterday.

Early on Monday, officers from the Port-of-Spain and Central Divisions, went to a house on Lower Couva Road, Preysal, Couva, to execute

a search warrant for arms and ammunition.

At the home of the 49-year-old suspect, the officers led by Insp (Ag) Grant and Bruno, Sgt Austin and Cpls Durity and Charles allegedly found 72 shotgun cartridges and 78 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition.

A search of the house resulted in the discovery of US$39,860, TT$23,500 and CAN$900 which were all seized under Section 38 of the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The suspect, who is the holder of a firearms user’s license (FUL), is only authorised to have in his possession two shotguns, two pistols and a prescribed amount of ammunition.

All items, inclusive of the licensed firearms, were confiscated and the man was detained at the Four Roads Police Station pending further investigations by Sgt Austin.

The joint exercise was coordinated by Senior Superintendent Kelvern Thompson, Supt Smith, ASP Henry, and included officers of the Financial Investigations Bureau (FIB), Western Division Gang Intelligence Unit, Western Division Task Force, Western Division Operations, Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB), Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and the Canine Unit.

Charges in the case are imminent.
