One more person has died from COVID-19 the Ministry of Health confirmed in its updates yesterday. The latest death, the ministry said was an elderly female with comorbidities. The fatality brings the total number of people to succumb to the virus locally to 71.

It also makes 63 deaths over the course of the country’s second phase of the infection which began on July 20 with case 139; 49 occurring within the last 27 days.

The total number of people to be infected since the first case was recorded on March 12 also rose to 4,362 yesterday after the country recorded 50 new cases yesterday from the 79 samples submitted within the previous 24 hours for testing.

The ministry noted that “12 were derived from one source, a centre for children.” The ministry’s release, however, did not distinguish whether all 12 infections were the wards of the home or if it included staff members.

Despite the new infections, the total number of active cases only increased by one to 2,057 as 49 COVID-19 positive people were released from the ministry’s care; 12 from public health facilities and 37 from home isolation who are now listed as “recovered community cases.”

Recovered community cases refer to those who were previously COVID-19 positive and in self-isolation at home and subsequently met the discharge criteria and were released from self-isolation.

The releases bring the total number of people to recover from the virus locally since the local epidemic began up to 2,234.

As of 10 am, there were 102 people receiving treatment in hospital the ministry’s morning update indicated. There were 56 at the Couva Hospital six people in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the High Dependency Unit (HDU) respectively. There were also three people in ICU at the Arima hospital of the five who were warded there. Caura Hospital had 27 patients, one at the Augustus Long Hospital, 10 at St Anns, one at Scarborough General Hospital and two at Scarborough Regional Hospital.

There were 112 COVID-19 Positive Patients in Step-down/Transition Facilities; 52 at UWI, Canada hall, 45 at UWI, Freedom hall, four at UWI, Debe, and 11 in Tobago.
