The actions of the reckless have pushed the need for the mask-wearing legislation.

The Minister of Social Development and Family Services Donna Cox said the need for this law was a case of Peter paying for Paul as the actions of some have caused this law to be necessary.

“In an ideal world my health should not be dependent upon the intelligence of others, but we do not live in an ideal world and sometimes it becomes necessary for the Government to protect ourselves from ourselves,” said Cox during her presentation in the Upper House yesterday.

Cox said the situation spoke to the need for personal responsibility, not only for yourself but for others.

Relating her own circumstances, Cox said she was unable to get close to her mother since the pandemic reached Trinidad.

“I have not been able to hug or kiss my mom since March…since this has come out, COVID-19. And that’s not an easy situation,” she said.

“I am not even sure if she understands why I cannot hug her or kiss her, but I have to be responsible. I may just be saving her life.”

However, Opposition Senator Anil Roberts questioned the need for the bill, since based on his observations all citizens in T&T had been wearing masks.

“As far as I can see, and I ask every senator here, for the last there days I have been driving around where it is in Diego Martin, down to South, La Romaime, eating doubles in Crystal Stream, going to buy bananas and so on for my daughter and I have not seen one citizen as yet not wearing a mask,” said Roberts.

“I am yet to see in three days of making a citizen without a mask, so I am not sure why exactly why we are here? Why now and not before?” asked Roberts in his usual animated manner.

Minister of Agriculture, Senator Clarence Rambharat, however, questioned the claim of widespread mask-wearing by Roberts, as he referred to a live video the UNC senator shared during recent election campaigning in Moruga.

Another Opposition Senator, Damian Lyder questioned the heaping of restrictions on what had been a “disciplined” public.
