Credit unions prepare for post vaccine economy

Tomorrow, expert economists will join leaders of the Credit Union movement to strategise, develop and introduce new business models that are most likely to survive in a Post Vaccine environment.

Three noted economists and opinion leaders will deliver presentations, field questions and
engage in discussions at a Virtual Thought Leadership Session hosted by the Central Finance Facility (CFF) on Friday July 30, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon via Zoom.

The panellists will speak on the theme “The Post Vaccine Economy and the Way Forward for Credit Unions.”

COVID-19 has not left the credit union movement unscathed. While there are some organizations within the fraternity who are weathering the storm well, there are others who are in greater need of guidance.

The CFF which is the Financial and Developmental Institution of the local Cooperative Movement decided that it was timely for credit union leaders to reset their operations and strategize as vaccination drives are being ramped up for the movement and other sectors of the Trinidad & Tobago economy.

According to CFF Vice-President, Mr. Lyndon Byer, “this is an opportune time for credit union leaders and managers to avail themselves to the wealth of expertise and take advantage of the new opportunities ahead”.

Forums like these will stimulate the repositioning of both the individual cooperative and the Cooperative movement. The speakers will be as follows:

  • Dr. Marlene Attzs, Development Economist and Lecturer, University of the West Indies (UWI)- Supporting Members on the Road to Recovery, who will be speaking on the topic” “Evaluating the role of credit unions in supporting the economic well-being of members, particularly women and youth, amidst the changes and uncertainty of the post-Covid era/post-vaccine era.”
  • Prof. Patrick Kent Watson, Professor Emeritus University of the West Indies (UWI). Core Areas: Applied Economics, Commerce and Accounting – Rebuilding the Post- Covid economy: “What is the role of the Credit Union Movement in supporting national economic recovery and growth in the post-vaccine era?”
  • Dr. Roger Hosein, Senior Economist & Lecturer, University of the West Indies (UWI) Looking Outward and Ahead: “How can the Cooperative Movement boost export performance and competitiveness of local sectors in the global post-Covid business environment?”

It is the mandate of the CFF to ensure that the Credit Union and non-financial cooperative Movement of Trinidad and Tobago remains resilient and sustainable during and post these unprecedented times through the principle of “Cooperation among Cooperatives”.
