The family of a two-year-old girl has been plunged into deep mourning following a freak accident on Thursday, where she died by drowning in a swimming pool at a private residence in Cunupia.

According to a police report, shortly after 4 pm the toddler’s father, Saddiq Muhammed, said he left his daughter in the company of her cousins and other relatives in the hall area of a private residence at Hillview Park in Munroe Road and went to pray. He returned at about 4.35 pm and noticed that his daughter was missing.

He raised an alarm and began frantically searching for her, as well as other relatives. They later found the toddler—Safoorah Muhammed—floating in the swimming pool of the residence.

They managed to fish her out of the pool and administered CPR. Although the Emergency Health Services were contacted, the family told police that they thought it best to take her for themselves to the Chaguanas District Health Facility where she was attended to.

However, at about 5:30 pm, the two-year-old was pronounced dead.

Police said the toddler lived at #12 Dindial Settlement, Pascal Road, Piparo.
