A container ship from Cyprus crashed into a pier at the Port of Port- of-Spain on Saturday night.

The ship named the KOUROU was scheduled to arrive at the port around 1 am.

On Sunday morning, photos and a short video were posted on social media, showing the damage to the pier.

No one was injured in the incident.

The vessel is owned by French container transportation and shipping company, CMA CGM.

Contacted yesterday for comment, Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan said he had not yet received a full report on the incident.

But Sinanan said according to the unofficial report, the vessel lost power during its approach to the port, causing it to collide with the pier.

Sinanan said there was no damage to the crane at the pier.

“It was just the pier that there was some damage. The engineers and insurance are looking into it and I should get an official report soon,” Sinanan said.

He said it was an unfortunate incident but it is not uncommon.

“These things do happen from time to time but I will wait for the full report before I say more.”

Sinanan said the Port Authority would issue a release today.
