A man’s claim that he had five bullets in his possession to make pendants for his friends did not save him from a $9,000 fine.
Randell Williams, 35, who was intoxicated at the time of his arrest was also fined $4,000 for driving under the influence of alcohol.
He pleaded guilty to both offences before San Fernando magistrate Kerianne Byer during a virtual hearing.
He was arrested on Saturday.
Court prosecutor Sgt Harold Ishmael said Constable Kerryn Griffith and other officers were on patrol duty along Mon Repos Street around 11.15 pm when he noticed Williams driving in the opposite direction.
However, when Williams saw the police vehicle he pulled a hoody over his head.
Williams was subsequently pulled over.
While Griffith was speaking to Williams, he detected a strong alcohol odour on his breath. When asked if he had consumed alcoholic beverages, Williams said, “Officer I drink about three scotch.”
The officer informed him that he would have to do a breathalyser test and then searched him.
In his back pants pocket, the officer found five bullets— a 38 spl and four .32 cavim.
When cautioned by the officer, he said, “Boss that is to drill and make pendants for my friends.”
Williams was arrested and taken to the Marabella Police Station where the breathalyser tests were administered.
He failed with a final reading of 110 microgrammes. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.
He was given three months to pay the fines. In default, he would serve four months on the drunk driving charge and two years on the ammunition charge.
