In spite of the challenges CAPE and CSEC students faced this year by sitting exams during a pandemic, they have persevered.

According to a breakdown of the statistics sent by the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, pass rates were higher in 19 subjects this year compared to 2019.

The numbers also revealed that over 95 per cent of CAPE students achieved acceptable passes while over 70 per cent did the same for CSEC.

It’s a performance the ministry congratulated teachers and parents for while acknowledging the discipline of students.

A total of 8,497 candidates, 3,439 males and 5,058 females, registered for CAPE Unit I and Unit II while 24,136 candidates, 13,364 females and 10,772 males registered for CSEC.

Over 55 per cent of students who attempted five or more subjects inclusive of Mathematics and English A, were successful.

One such student is Calypsonian Aaron Duncan who passed all his CSEC subjects.

“You continue to make us proud in all aspects,” his mother Lydia Ducan posted to social media.

The Trinbago Unified Calypsonian Organisation (Tuco) also congratulated the young star on its Facebook page and said, “He has demonstrated that there can be a balance between academic and the arts.”

Other relatives also expressed how proud they were of their loved ones as they kept going even in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

One father wrote, “My heart is full once again Chloe has done us proud.”

One woman posted this message for her nephew, “despite Covid-19 you remained focussed and committed and have achieved, keep reaching for the stars.”

But even with the improvements across the board not every student was happy with the results.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar had a message for those students she said, “To those who may not have received their desired outcomes, I ask you to not be disheartened but to recommit to working towards your goals.”

She congratulated the students for their success after so many years of hard work, long hours and sacrifices, and in this case, amidst a pandemic.

Registration is underway for the January 2021 and May/June 2021 CSEC and CAPE examinations.
