EMA investigating discharge of petrochemical waste in Barrackpore

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) is currently investigating reports of the discharge of petrochemical waste in Barrackpore. The EMA says preliminary investigations at the facility in Barrackpore have been conducted. The following is a press release from The EMA:

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) is investigating reports of the discharge of petrochemical waste in Barrackpore. Based on reports received on Monday 13th September 2021, the EMA’s Emergency Response and Investigating Unit (ERI) and Permit Monitoring and Complaints Unit (PMC) conducted a preliminary investigation at the facility in Barrackpore in the vicinity of the South Oropouche River.

This facility is involved in the handling of petrochemical waste and is the holder of a Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC), CEC3264/2011. Through the Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC) Rules, waste handling facilities must apply for and obtain a CEC for the establishment, modification, expansion, decommissioning or abandonment of the facility.

Depending on the type of waste, the receiving environment and the quantity of waste being improperly disposed of, impacts can range from short to long term negative impacts to local ecosystems, impacts to human health from acute or chronic exposure to hazardous materials and potential impacts to local livelihoods of persons who rely on the river’s biological resources as a source of income.
