The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) has confirmed that it will be conducting its own probe into the circumstances that led to the explosion and fire at the Ni Quan GTL Plant in Pointe-a-Pierre.

EMA investigating explosion at Pointe-a-Pierre

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) can confirm that a report was received from Paria Trading Limited of an explosion that occurred today at 6:30am.

The EMA can confirm that the incident occurred at NiQuan Energy Trinidad Limited’s Gas to Liquids Plant located on what was formerly the Petrotrin Pointe-a-Pierre refinery and for which a Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC) was issued for the modification of the Gas To Liquid Plant process to include a steam generator and chiller system.

The EMA’s Emergency Response and Investigating Unit (ERI) is involved in coordinating with the incident commander and other relevant agencies to receive the outcome of the preliminary findings, following which the EMA will conduct an assessment of environmental impact and further investigations at the site of the incident in accordance with the conditions as outlined in the CEC.

Investigations are ongoing.
