Emergency shelters needed for COVID-19 displaced persons

Member of Parliament for Couva North, Ramona Ramdial, is recommending that Government begin putting more emergency shelters in place, as the COVID-19 crisis continues in this country.

She is concerned that many people would be put out on the streets by their landlords, if they don’t get some sort of assistance soon.

The Couva North MP told Guardian Media that her office is bombarded with daily calls from persons seeking the Rental Assistance Grant. She says even through people have filled in the required forms and sent in their applications, no one has yet collected any grants.

MP Ramdial reports that persons were coming to her office, literally in tears, because they had nowhere else to turn. She says landlords have warned several tenants that they would be booted out of their apartments if they fail to cough up any cash by the end of this month.

The Couva North MP warns that many would be tossed on the streets unless government pays the grants or sets up emergency shelters where evicted families could stay until the COVID-19 crisis is over.
