A former United National Congress councillor for Moruga was stabbed during a political rally in Moruga on Saturday night.
UNC supporter Phillip Gonzales, 58, was reportedly stabbed three times and is now undergoing emergency treatment at the Princes Town Health Hospital.
It is not clear what caused the attack but Phillip had an altercation with supporters of the People’s National Movement prior to the incident.
The stabbing incident occurred following a motorcade and rally in support of UNC Moruga/Tableland candidate Michelle Benjamin.
Police reports stated that around 9.30 pm in Basseterre, a man entered a maxi taxi in which Gonzales was a passenger.
Phillip demanded that the man leave the maxi but he refused and they had an altercation. The man then stabbed him on the right side of his chest and twice in his abdomen.
A video circulating on social media shows Phillip bareback and a cloth covering a bloody area on the upper part of his body.
UNC supporters who were at the rally earlier said Gonzales had an altercation with PNM supporters who spat on him.
Guardian Media understands that the motorcade culminated at Cumuto Grounds in Barrackpore where Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar addressed supporters.
